Acted as governor of Carlisle College, trustee of Eden Valley Hospice, and chairman of Carlisle City Centre Management Trust. Qualified offshore yachtsman with own boat moored in Scotland, and collector of antiquarian books on sailing. Also enjoys country sports.

Background:
An MA graduate from St John's College Cambridge, he qualified as a solicitor in 1976 and joined Cartmell Shepherd the following year from a London law firm. Became a partner with Cartmell Shepherd in 1979, and subsequently achieved an MBA (with Distinction).
Professional Activities:
Member of STEP (the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) on its inception, and the Campaign to Simplify Legal English. Member of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.
