Family businesses are the lifeblood of the Cumbrian economy and the hotel and leisure sector makes a significant contribution to that economy. We at Cartmell Shepherd recognise this and that is why we decided in 2017 to put together a team providing a full range of legal services to the hotel and leisure sector.
All members of the team have experience in acting on various transactional matters ranging in value from thousands of pounds to multi millions including:
• Sales and purchases of businesses whether by way of a sale and purchase of the assets or shares
• Refinancing packages involving a wide range of institutional lenders and Big Lottery and Sports England funding and
• Business restructures in readiness for sale.
In addition to advice on transactional matters we also advise on a wide range of employment and HR issues including the transfer of staff on a sale or purchase under the Transfer of Undertakings Regulations, the preparation of employment contracts, staff handbooks and policies and also partnership or shareholders’ agreements.
With expertise in the new General Data Protection Regulation which is coming into UK law on 25 May 2018, we can assist hospitality and leisure businesses review their current practices and implement the required changes to be compliant.
We take pride in the fact that we work closely as a team to deliver tailored, practical and pragmatic solutions to our clients and that the advice we give aims to balance both legal requirements and the clients’ commercial goals. We can provide a level of service that matches the City firms but with a more personal approach with an emphasis on accessibility while having a transparent approach to costs. Our approach is that the more businesses in Cumbria source their services from their neighbours, the local economy as a whole will benefit.
We act for a range of clients throughout the Hotel and Leisure industry including, hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, caravan parks, restaurants, pubs, bars and sports clubs.
Cartmell Shepherd is proud to be associated with the Cumbria Family Business awards as sponsor of the Large Leisure and Tourism Business category. Sue and her team have worked tirelessly over the year to make this event a success. We are thrilled that this year saw a record number of entries and the breadth and quality of the entrants has been outstanding.
Commenting on the finalists in the category, Peter Stafford managing director at Cartmell Shepherd said “Not only have these families created businesses of remarkable quality which are all jewels in Cumbria’s crown, they have also become large scale employers and economic contributors. They have maintained family values whilst achieving all this and any of them would be worthy winners.”
