Taking part in a Summer Vacation Scheme with Cartmells is a great way to gain some experience in a law firm, and to decide whether the law and Cartmells might be the career for you!

Vacation Scheme 2026

Eligibility: LLB law students

Dates: 20 July – 7 August 2026

About the Scheme

Our Cartmell Shepherd Vacation Scheme is designed for first and second‑year law students who are interested in gaining hands‑on experience within a leading regional law firm. Participants who perform well may be invited to our graduate trainee interview programme later in the year (typically October/November), with the potential to secure a training contract upon completion of their studies.

What to Expect

The scheme runs annually across the final two weeks of July and the first week of August.

  • Carlisle: 3–4 students per week (maximum of 8 across the scheme)
  • Hexham: 2–3 students per week

Each student will spend time in the following departments:

  • Dispute Resolution
  • Family and Employment (half a day in each)
  • Private Client
  • Property and Agriculture

Every department follows a structured programme, reviewed and refreshed each year. Students are supported by dedicated mentors who provide guidance and feedback throughout the placement.

During the scheme, each participant will also have a 30‑minute informal interview, reducing the interview requirements during the autumn trainee recruitment process.

Students will receive a feedback form at the end of their placement and will be invited to a social event at the end of each week.

Placements take place across our Viaduct House, Rosehill, and Hexham offices, ensuring students are assessed consistently by the managers involved in trainee recruitment.

If you are interested in applying, please apply with a CV and covering letter to Lindsay Berry by email here, no later than 30 April 2026.
