Taking part in a Summer Vacation Scheme with Cartmells is a great way to gain some experience in a law firm, and to decide whether the law and Cartmells might be the career for you!

Our 2025 vacation scheme will run on three separate weeks from 21 July through to 7 August with a maximum of three candidates per week. Each candidate will spend one day being mentored in each of the following departments:

  • Dispute Resolution
  • Family and Employment (1/2 day each)
  • Private Client
  • Property and Agriculture

You will be provided with varying tasks to undertake including preparing real client work, researching the law, and where possible attend meetings and/or court hearings. At the end of the week will be a social event for you to network with other members of the firm outside of the office.

You must be a first or second year law student to be eligible for the scheme. Successful candidates will be invited onto our graduate trainee interview programme later in the year, which usually takes place in October.

As part of the vacation scheme you will take part in an informal interview with one or two of our directors and department heads, which will be considered as the initial stage of the graduate interview programme.

Placements are held primarily in our two Carlisle offices, and Hexham.
