From Pool to Pavement: Cartmell Shepherd Team Take on Memorial Triathlon
May 20th 2026A team from Cartmell Shepherd Solicitors are set to take on their first triathlon in honour of a much-loved former colleague.
On Sunday 14 June 2026, Terri Hope, Marketing Manager, Rob Winder, Senior Associate and Head of Property Litigation, and Mandy Shum, Conveyancer, will take on a very special memorial triathlon at Greystoke Open Air Swimming Pool near Penrith, to remember their dear friend and colleague, Zoe Calway.
Zoe, who tragically died in 2024 after a short illness, was a Director at Cartmell Shepherd and Head of the Penrith office. Her loss continues to be felt deeply across the firm and beyond. Kind, vibrant and endlessly encouraging, Zoe inspired those around her both professionally and personally, always taking time to motivate others to challenge themselves and get involved.
A Legacy of Leadership, Kindness and Courage
Alongside her outstanding legal career, Zoe had a deep love of exercise and the outdoors, which she made time for even during the busiest of days. She was a keen runner, loved open‑water swimming and would cycle to work on some mornings, seeing fitness as an essential part of her wellbeing.
During the Covid lockdown, Zoe trained for the Lakesman Triathlon with R9 Coaching, where she formed a close friendship with Samantha Sugden, founder of R9 Tri Club. Their shared passion for triathlon and supporting others through sport created a strong bond that continued beyond the event.
In 2023, Zoe completed the Lakesman Triathlon on behalf of Cartmell Shepherd, leaving a lasting impression on organisers and competitors alike. So powerful was her impact that she is now remembered through the Zoe Calway Inspiration Trophy, awarded each year to the Lakesmini competitor who demonstrates the greatest courage.
Our Triathlon Tribute
In her honour, Terri, Rob and Mandy will take on a relay triathlon – a challenge that mirrors Zoe’s passion for stepping outside comfort zones.
The triathlon will be shared as follows:
Terri Hope – 200m swim
Rob Winder – 10km bike
Mandy Shum – 3km run
While the team all love the outdoors, this will be their first ever triathlon and they bring a real mix of fitness levels to the challenge. Mandy is the self‑confessed fitness queen, running every morning before work. Terri, meanwhile, hasn’t swum properly since school, and Rob has borrowed a bike especially for the event. What unites them is a shared determination to give their all and do Zoe proud.
Reflecting on why the event means so much, Terri said:
“Zoe always encouraged us to get involved in her exercise challenges. During Covid, we took part in the Step Up for Dementia challenge together, raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. I’m not expecting any personal bests during this triathlon, but raising awareness and much‑needed funds in Zoe’s memory is what matters to us. I hope we do her proud.
Thank you to everyone who is supporting us or donating to our fundraising for Eden Valley Hospice – and for helping us honour Zoe’s memory with love, gratitude and kindness.”
A Day of Sport, Support and Remembrance
This event is organised in Zoe’s memory, with all funds raised donated to Eden Valley Hospice. It is brought together by Samantha Sugden of R9 Tri Club, where Zoe was a valued and inspirational member.
Samantha’s connection with Zoe began when Zoe joined R9 for swim coaching. At the time, Zoe struggled to swim more than 25 metres of front crawl, despite facing a 1,900 metre swim in the Lakesman event. What began as swim coaching soon developed into Samantha supporting Zoe across all aspects of her Lakesman training, making the event day especially meaningful.
Reflecting on Zoe’s impact, Samantha said:
“Zoe pushed me to be a better person and to try harder. Her infectious determination and love of life inspired everyone around her, and it is a real honour to bring this event together for the second year in her memory, celebrating the sport that connects us all.”
This charity event offers relaxed, recreational triathlon style challenges designed to be inclusive, supportive and accessible. Participants can choose to complete two or three elements of swim, bike and run.
Entries are now open and participants are invited to register and be part of this special event in Zoe’s memory.
The day will begin at Greystoke Open Air Swimming Pool, with cycling routes through surrounding villages and a scenic run across paths and fields. A spacious transition area on the field next to the pool will create a hub for participants and supporters alike.
The event’s friendly, community focused atmosphere makes it ideal for beginners, improvers, friends and families. Volunteers are also welcome, and anyone interested in marshalling is encouraged to get in touch.
Supporting Eden Valley Hospice
All funds raised will be donated to Eden Valley Hospice, who cared for Zoe with exceptional compassion, dignity and kindness during her final weeks. Their support meant so much to Zoe, her family and to those closest to her, helping create precious moments and lasting memories during an incredibly difficult time.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help Eden Valley Hospice continue their vital work for patients and families when they need it most.
A Lasting Tribute
This triathlon is for Zoe – for her leadership, her encouragement, and the way she inspired others to keep going, keep trying and keep caring. The team hopes that, in their own small way, this event reflects the spirit Zoe lived with every day.
