Celebrating Women in Law: Honouring Our Female Leaders on International Women’s Day

March 4th 2025

At Cartmell Shepherd, we are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day by recognising the outstanding achievements of our female leaders. Law has long been a male-dominated profession, but times are changing and more women than ever are entering the legal sector. However, while progress has been made, women remain underrepresented at senior levels across the profession.

At our firm, we are committed to breaking down barriers and championing gender equality in leadership. Today, we shine a spotlight on four of our incredible female directors who are leading the way in their respective fields.

Carol O’Donoghue,  Business Development & Marketing Director

A successful firm is built not only on legal expertise but also on strong strategic vision and client relationships. Carol plays a key role in shaping our firms growth, ensuring we remain innovative, visible, and connected with clients. Her leadership in marketing and business development has strengthened our reputation and positioned us as a leader in the legal industry.

“In a competitive industry, it’s about more than just providing excellent legal advice it’s about building trust, strong client relationships, and a reputation for excellence. I’m proud to be part of a firm that champions diversity and supports women in leadership.”

Katherine Pretswell-Walker, Agricultural Solicitor, Award-Winning Agricultural Law Team

Agricultural law requires specialist expertise and a deep understanding of the rural economy, an area where Katherine excels. As part of our award-winning Agricultural Law Team, she advises farmers, landowners, and agribusinesses on complex legal matters, from succession planning to environmental regulations. In a traditionally male-dominated sector, she is breaking down barriers and setting an example for future generations of women in law.

“Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and I’m passionate about ensuring that our rural clients receive the best legal support. As a woman in law, I’m proud to challenge stereotypes and help shape the future of agricultural law.”

Joanne Stronach, Head of Employment Law

With workplace laws constantly evolving, expert legal guidance is essential. As Head of Employment Law, Joanne leads our team in advising both employers and employees on all aspects of employment rights, workplace disputes, and HR best practices. She is a strong advocate for fairness, equality, and diversity in the workplace, principles that align with the very essence of International Women’s Day.

“Employment law is not just about policies and contracts, it’s about people. People are a business’ biggest asset.  Whether it’s helping businesses manage their staff issues in accordance with employment law or promoting a positive work culture free from discrimination, I am proud to make a difference in shaping fair and just workplaces.”

Deborah Flynn, Head of Wills, Probate & Inheritance Department

Dealing with sensitive matters such as Wills, probate, and inheritance requires not only technical legal expertise but also empathy and understanding. Deborah leads one of the largest Wills, Probate & Inheritance teams in the region, helping families and individuals navigate difficult times with confidence and security.

“Planning for the future brings peace of mind. I take great pride in helping clients secure their legacy and protect their loved ones. As a female leader in this field, I hope to inspire more women to pursue a career in private client law.”

Women in Law: Progress Made, Work Still to Do

While more women are entering the legal profession than ever before, the reality is that they remain underrepresented at senior levels. According to recent studies, women make up the majority of new law graduates, yet they still hold fewer leadership positions compared to their male counterparts.

At Cartmell Shepherd, we are committed to challenging this imbalance by fostering a culture where talent is recognised and leadership opportunities are open to all, regardless of gender.

Championing the Next Generation of Female Leaders

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate not just the achievements of our female directors but also the many talented women across our firm who continue to shape the future of law. We also recognise the importance of mentorship, support, and policy change in ensuring that the next generation of female lawyers can rise to leadership roles.

At Cartmell Shepherd, we are proud to be part of the movement driving change in the legal profession, because when women succeed, the entire industry benefits.
