March 6th 2025

On national careers week we’re sharing 5 Top Tips from our HR Manager Lindsay Berry for Law Firm Interviews

Job interviews at law firms can be competitive, but with the right preparation, you can make a lasting impression. Here are five key tips from our HR manager to help you succeed:

1. Know the Firm Inside Out

  •  Research the firm’s practice areas, recent cases, and core values.
  •  Understand their culture. Are they corporate, client-focused, or community-driven?
  •  Be ready to explain why you specifically want to work there.

Tip: Follow their LinkedIn page and check their website for recent updates.

2. Demonstrate Your Legal Knowledge & Commercial Awareness

  •  Stay updated on current legal trends, key cases, and regulatory changes.
  •  Show understanding of how law and business intersect, especially in relevant practice areas.
  •  Be prepared to discuss how current affairs impact the firm’s work.

Example: I recently read about [Case Name] and found its impact on [Practice Area] particularly interesting because…

3. Master Competency-Based Questions

  •  Expect scenario-based questions (e.g. tell me about a time you handled a difficult client).
  •  Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answer.
  •  Highlight teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills which are all crucial in law.

Example Question:   Describe a time you had to juggle multiple deadlines.

Structure your response to show prioritisation, organisation, and adaptability.

4. Ask Insightful Questions

  •  Interviews are a two-way process so show your enthusiasm by asking thoughtful questions.

 Examples:

What do you enjoy most about working at [Firm Name]

How does the firm support career development and progression?

What challenges do you see in [Practice Area] in the next 5 years?

Tip: Avoid asking about salary in the first interview – wait until later stages.

5. Perfect Your Professionalism & Body Language

  • Dress in smart business attire, even for virtual interviews.
  • Maintain good posture, eye contact, and a confident handshake.
  •  Speak clearly and concisely – lawyers value precision!

Tip: In virtual interviews, check your lighting, background, and internet connection beforehand.

Final Thought

Interviews are as much about cultural fit as they are about legal expertise. Be yourself, show enthusiasm, and demonstrate why you’d be a great addition to the team!
